In the capital of Italy, irresistible trattorias, gelato shops and Neapolitan pizzerias line the streets.

It’s a food scene that Shanon Scott, owner of newly unveiled ROMA in Rice Village, is personally familiar with, and it’s his inspiration for transforming Sud Italia into a more casual concept.

“We wanted to give Houston a great menu with authentic Italian food that is both approachable and affordable,” says Scott.

The intimate neighborhood trattoria has been completely remodeled with freshly painted gray walls, new doors and charming photos of Italy.

Former Sud Italia chef Angelo Cuppone is crafting steaming bowls of spaghetti carbonara, cacio e pepe with cocoa-infused pasta, and bucatini all’Amatriciana, as well as Romanstyle deep-dish pies. Rotating specials might include other dishes from Italy such as vitello tonnato, seafood risotto and seasonal dishes from Rome.

The all-Italian wine list and the stellar patio have remained, and a new full bar menu is in the works—just in time for alfresco season in Houston.
