We have some very special wines for this week’s virtual wine dinner: Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from Veneto in northeast Italy.

These are not the big, bold, fruit- and oak-driven wines that we have come to expect from international modern-style Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. They are fresh and lean expressions of those grape varieties that really capture their essence. Many who already know Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from Tuscany will be surprised to learn that people in Veneto have been growing these wines in the pebbly “diluvial” soils of the Piave River Valley for more than 300 years. We know that you are going to enjoy pairing them with Chef Angelo’s menu.

But there’s another and more important reason why this dinner is so special. A lot of you who have been joining us regularly will remember that the series was launched last year by our friends at the Antonutti winery, Melania and Elena. The winery’s owner Nicola Durandi was one of the earliest guests. Sadly, Nicola passed away unexpectedly last year, just a few months after our event. And so this week, we have asked Melania and Elena to join us this week to present these wonderful wines from his Veneto estate. We will most definitely be raising a glass in his memory.

What about the image we used for this post? You’ll have to join us on Thursday to find out what it means and why it’s so special to us.
