We are in for such a treat for this Thursday’s virtual wine dinner!

For this week’s virtual dinner, we’ll be sending you home with a bottle of wine from one of the most famous farms in Italy: The Tenuta di Tignanello in the heart of Chianti Classico, the same farm that produces Antinori’s legendary Tignanello and Solaia wines.

Tignanello and Solaia are widely considered to be among the first historical “Super Tuscans” (wines made in an international/modern style using international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that have been grown in Tuscany). There’s a reason that the Antinori family decided to use that farm for their groundbreaking and now iconic labels. That’s because it’s a great place to grow fine wine grapes.

But where Solaia is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and Tignanello (the Super Tuscan) is made from Sangiovese with a hefty addition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to give it more power and structure, the Tenuta di Tignanello Chianti Classico Riserva is Sangiovese in all its glory. Just a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon (from those same legendary vineyards) is added to give the wine a little more color and complexity.

On Saturday night, we opened a bottle of this extraordinary wine at our house. Its vibrant fruit sang with notes of plum and wild berries as its texture coated the palate with flavors of gentle earth and dried herbs (think sage and rosemary). It was one of the best wines we’ve opened this fall and I’m thrilled that we will be sharing it with you this Thursday.
