For this week’s virtual wine dinner and seminar, we’ll be heading back to Tuscany to taste one of Montalcino’s most iconic wines: Tenute Silvio Nardi.

Brunello lovers rejoice! We’ll be sending you home this week with a bottle of 2016 Brunello di Montalcino, a top-rated wine from a top-rated vintage, one that rivals the already legendary 2015, as some critics argue.

Bruce Sanderson, senior editor for Wine Spectator, gave the 2016 Nardi Brunello a whopping 93 points.

And Monica Larner, senior editor for (Wine Advocate), gave it no less than 95+ points!

I could go on and on with stellar scores and rave reviews for this wine. But you get the picture.

The thing that interests me the most about this wine is that it is the apotheosis of what we call today “modern-style Brunello.”

Nardi uses large Slavonian casks for the aging of its wines — a hallmark of traditional-style Brunello. But they also use small French barriques, vessels that help to accentuate the fruit character of the wine.

That’s not to say that Nardi is an over-the-top modernist: its wines strike (what I consider) a perfect balance between modernity and tradition. The winemaking never eclipses the natural character of the grape or the appellation. But it delivers a wine that can have a broader appeal among Napa and Bordeaux lovers and collectors.

Given the extremely high scores for this wine, it’s arguably one of the best values that we’ve ever done in this series. The price is the same, $119 per couple, even though this wine retails for upward of $80. And of course, we’ll be doing a follow-up retail offering for those who want to put some of it down in the cellars or serve it to their guests this holiday season.

I’m super psyched about this one and I hope you’ll join us. It wouldn’t be possible without you. Thank you and I hope to see you on the Zoom call this week!
