“The Mauro Molino winery,” wrote the great Italian wine writer Ian D’Agata last year, “is but one of the many very fine estates [in Barolo] that does not get the attention and praise it deserves.”

This under-the-radar estate has always been a favorite of ours at ROMA (you may remember that the 2016 single-vineyard Barolo Gallinotto was “Shanon’s Pick” on our list for a few months last year).

Why hasn’t it received the “attention and praise it deserves”? Most likely because Mauro Molino, who produced his first vintage of Barolo in the village of La Morra in 1982, was never interested in marketing the estate and the investment that it would require. He just kept making great, “old school” Barolo and selling it to the handful of wine connoisseurs (like Ian and us) who appreciate it.

In my view, 2022 is going to be the year of Mauro Molino. And that’s because his children are now managing the estate and bringing a whole new energy to the marketing of these super, classic-styled wines.

This Thursday, we’ll be joined by Martina Molino (above), a woman who is part of the new generation of forward-thinking Barolo growers and winemakers.

I spoke to her week before last and I know you are going to really enjoy meeting and tasting with her.

And the wine? Per Bacco! as the Italians say. “For the love of Bacchus!” This is the type of “slow wine” that we love and collect at our house. I know you’re going to love it. And it’s the perfect counterpoint to the modern-leaning Barolo we tasted last week.
